KeymasterI have found an “Agecroft Hall Paper Works” near Pendleton. No other references to that plant – I cannot be sure if it was a mill or a pape converter. Quite a few Kirkman people in the area.
The 1901 census has a William born Bury age 29 occupation Paper ????? married to Annie living at 7 Cauldwell Street Pendleton. Children Joseph Florence and William. Could this be him?

KeymasterHi Janis
I am sure that the BAPH can help you – I will ask the relevant people. The archive documents from Sun are held a Oldham Library if that is any help.
The mill in Sittingbourne was probably Sittingborne Paper Mill – not new but undergoing rapid expansion in 1904 under Edward Lloyd.
I will ask some people if they can help.

KeymasterHi Daven
Have modified Creech entry – you are correct.
Have had email from Tony Cornish
I wanted to mention that when I worked in the UK I used to deal with a Mill at Creech in Somerset called Robert Somerville. They made woodfree uncoateds on a single machine. The reason I probably remember them is that once they phoned us to apologise about the funny “squiggly lines” on an order they had supplied to us, which they told us, as they took their water from the river alongside the Mill, was from baby eels, I think that they are called elvers, swimming up the wire.
As I recall the quality was generally on the low side but acceptable.
enough said!

In 1980 I presented a paper to a PITA conference entitled “Effluent Treatment in the Real World” for which I used a number of slides.

KeymasterHi Angela
Welcome to the forum. Sorry you had problem uploading your files – probably too large limit is 500KB. I’ll send you an email – if you attach your files to a reply I’ll see what I can do.
In some ways the forum is not relevant to your needs as, for the moment, we limited the mill range to those that have shut since 1970.
However, the BAPH does have a lot of people with lots of information about watermarks and the mills that used them. I am working on a listing of about 4000 that were in use in 1967.
I’ll forward some contacts in the BAPH that may be able to help.

KeymasterMemories of Aylesford Paper Mills
I the spirit of the forum, here are some of my memories of Aylesford in the period 1974-1981 when I worked in the Technical Dept. and in the Production Dept. running the water system. It was a period of financial pressure causing great change: from 9 machines down to 4 and the work-force from 2000 to 900.
Still it was a great learning experience.Attachments:
