In 1883 The Paper Mill Directory of the World listed these Birmingham mills:

• Aston Paper Mills Company, Rocky Lane, Birmingham. Manilla and Wrapping. 1 machine.
• Baldwin, James A Sons, Kings Norton, near Birmingham, Wrapping, Gun Wadding and Bag Papers. 3 machines, 1 vat,
• Birmingham Paper Mills Company, Cattles Grove, Nechells, Birmingham. Glazed, Manillas and Tobacco Papers. 2 machines
• Inshaw, John & Sons, Birmingham. Browns and Manilla. 1 machine
• Smith, Stone & Knight, Union Paper Mills, Birmingham. Browns, Wrapping, Manilla and Cartridge. 2 machines.  Now the Smurfit mill in Nechells which is still operating.

Phillips Paper Trade Directory 1923 listed four:

• Aston Paper Mills, Cheston Road, Birmingham. T.N., 844 East. One machine, 80 ins. Manillas, Rope and other Browns.
• Baldwin (James) & Sons, Ltd., Sherborne Mill (169), King's Norton, Birmingham (E). Warehouse: Morville Street, Birmingham. N.R.S., P. & G.S., Lifford M.R., \ mile. T.A., " Baldwins, King's Norton." T.N., 2922 Central, Birmingham. Two machines, 76 ins. and 80 ins. Ropes, Manillas, and other Browns. Glazed and Unglazed, Grocery and Bag Papers, etc. London: 83, Upper Thames Street, E.C.4.
• Birmingham Paper Mills, Cattells Grove, Nechells, Birmingham. T.N., 845 East Two machines, 80 ins. and 72 ins. Biscuit, Manillas, and M.G. Caps, Grocery Papers, Tube and Jacquard Papers, Mill Wrappers. N.R.S., for all Mills, Birmingham. T.A., for all Mills, " Paper, Birmingham."
• Smith, Stone & Knight, Ltd., Union Paper Mills, Landor Street, Birmingham (E). T.N., 843 East (3 lines). Two Fourdrinier machines, 72 ins. and 63 ins. Glazed Browns, Grocery Papers, Glazed and Friction-glazed Papers, Sugar and Cap Bags, Middles, Corrugated Paper, Ticket and Tube Papers, Paper Bags, etc. (5,800 tons yearly.)

By 1967 The Directory of Papermakers of Great Britain listed

• 169 Kings Norton Paper Mills, Limited, Sherborne Mill, Kings Norton Birmingham. T. N. Kings Norton 1186 & 1187. Rope Brown, Mill Wrappers, Sugar Bag, Twine Wrapping, Jacquard Middles and Strawpaper. Two Machines,: 74 and 80 inches. G. S. Lifford.
• Smith, Stone & Knight, Limited, Birmingham & Bristol. Wrapping and Packing Papers, Tube Papers, Pastel Papers, Royal Hands, Ticket Middles, Strawpaper, Paper Bags (all classes), Corrugated Rolls, Boxes and Cartons. Four Machines: one 92 inches Fourdrinier, one 90 inches, two 78 inches M. G.
• Southalls (Birmingham), Limited, Charford Mills, Saltley, Birmingham, 8. T. A. -“Southall, Birmingham. ” T. N. -East 0204 (5 lines). Cellulose Wadding.

 

Not a well known papermaking area just one mill - Albert Mill at Retford.
