ParticipantI remember Cooke & Nuttall paper mill in Horwich very well. My father, John Ralph Ainscough, started work there in 1939 as a laboratory assistant and, after being demobbed from the RAF in 1946 and working at the Edward Collins paper mill in Glasgow, returned to Horwich in 1955, becoming Chief Chemist at Cooke & Nuttall. The mill was reached by a narrow lane (Star Lane) running off Crown Lane, and I visited the laboratory and the machine rooms several times between 1951 and 1957.

ParticipantThis mill was known as Cooke & Nuttall Ltd and the address was Vale Paper Mills, Star Lane, Horwich, Lancashire. The mill closed in December 1980 after several years of unprofitable trading. After many years the site was eventually redeveloped for housing with the entirely inappropriate name of Butterwick Fields.
The site and water supply were also shared with 2 cotton bleaching works – Star Bleaching and Jolly & Jackson which later formed part of the Bleachers Association.

ParticipantFurther to my last post I have written about my recollections of working in the mill during school and university holidays. These can be read on the Horwich Heritage Centre website – click on Looking Back for the article. I am hoping to update with more details about the mill and its people soon.

KeymasterHi Michael
Many thanks for your input.
I had a good look – it’s a great record of a historic mill.
I have to admit your specific article was not easy to find on the site, so here is the link.

KeymasterHi Michael
Thanks for getting in touch. I’ve changed your email address and also removed the new one from your post for your security.
However, the emails sent to the address given are being returned:
The following address failed:
SMTP error from remote server for TEXT command, host: mta5.am0.yahoodns.net (67.195.228.110) reason: 552 1 Requested mail action aborted, mailbox not found
Presumably, there’s a problem in it.
It would be great to have your new article on the forum. If it is less than 4 MB you can attach it to a post on the forum. If it’s bigger, then let me know.
Many thanks
Chris
