ParticipantI joined Inveresk Group in 1967 and was employed as Sales Representative covering Scotland, N.E.England and, laterly, all Ireland, selling for all the Group Mills – including the Collins M G Mill.
Many memories come alive now – when, following a heavy downpour, the river would become brown so the Mill could not make any MG White Poster. My main sales were for MG Envelope manilla papers both plain and basket and ribbed felt finish. My main client was WT Stationery in Aberdeen who ordered their Ribble MG Ribbed Manilla.
It was the problem with the river debris that lost the mill tonnage of MG White from the Samuel Jones factory in Tilicoultry. I remember that I had to visit them not long after joining Inveresk to tell them we could no longer supply them and had to cancel all orders on hand! I was not popular with them but earned some credit from my new employer!!
So sad to see them close which happened after I had left the Scottish Office to join the Group’s Export Office based in the St Cuthbert’s Paper Mill in Wells, Somerset – another one gone!

ParticipantHello John Wheeler, good to see your reply.
I wonder if you remember a Young John Jack who to the best of my knowledge joined Stoneywood M.G. mill as a young apprentice engineer? John is seen in the above video and has been a great help to me in providing information on the Denny papermills. In fact I bumped into him the other day and he gave me some welcome information on a war memorial dedicated to those that were involved in the great war. I will post more information on the memorial very soon.
I also was in contact with John Rae another engineer who kindly sent me some artifacts relating to Stoneywood I will post these also.

ParticipantGood day John!
So good to know that what one does post is read!!
Unfortunately, the names you mention I do not know. I was employed on the Sales and Marketing side of Inveresk Group based at Lochmill, Linlithgow, so, apart from visits to the mill to see orders being made or for meetings, I did not meet those at the ‘sharp end’ very often. However, one of my colleagues was Alex Cooper who lived in the mill cottages in Denny and who you may have known. I also knew John CONNOR and Sandy Muirhead (who does’nt!)
Such a pity the old Group has faded away but, through the likes of your goodself, John, we can relive many happy memories!!
Keep well,
Yours Aye,
John WHEELER
